VO Pro Tip: Tracking the Right Data

Tracking the Right Data

Hey Reader,

In the early stages of a VO career, it’s easy to get obsessed with one single metric: The Booking.

While booking the job is the ultimate goal, it’s actually a "lagging indicator." If you only track your wins, you’re missing the data that tells you how to win more often. To grow your business, you need to look under the hood.

Here is the pro tip: Start tracking these three "hidden" metrics to see where your business is actually growing (and where it’s stalling).

  • Auditions vs. Callbacks/Shortlists: If you’re auditioning a lot but never getting shortlisted, it’s a sign to look at your performance or your audio quality. If you are getting shortlisted but not booking, you’re likely "in the ballpark," and it might just be a matter of volume or a minor tweak in your signature sound.
  • Genre ROI (Return on Investment): You might love doing character work or animation, but if 80% of your income is coming from Corporate Narration, that’s your "bread and butter." Track how much time you spend on each genre versus how much money they actually bring in.
  • Source Effectiveness: Where are your best leads coming from? Is it a specific P2P site, your agent, or your direct marketing efforts? If you spend 10 hours a week on a platform that only nets you one job a year, it might be time to reallocate that time to something else.

The goal isn't to become a data scientist. It’s simply to stop guessing. When you track the right data, you can make informed decisions about where to put your energy.

As you grow as a talent—and as the industry trends shift—a demo that sounded "pro" two years ago might be holding you back today. Here is the pro tip: Schedule a Demo Audit every six months to ensure...

But today, technology allows us to be mobile without sacrificing the professional quality our clients expect, should you so choose to make yourself available in that...

The Final Line Hey Reader, Have you ever listened back to a take and felt like the energy just... evaporated at the end? It’s a common habit: we put all our focus into a strong hook and a solid body, but as we reach the final sentence, our brains subconsciously go, "Almost done!" The result is a last line that trails off, drops in volume, or sounds like we're just checking a box. However, the last line is often the most important part of the script—it’s where the brand name or the...
