VO Pro Tip: How to Audit your Demos


Auditing your Demos

Hey Reader,

When was the last time you actually listened to your own demos? Not just a quick skim to make sure the file works, but a deep, critical listen from start to finish?

It’s easy to treat a demo like a "finished product," but in reality, your demo is a living document. As you grow as a talent—and as the industry trends shift—a demo that sounded "pro" two years ago might be holding you back today.

Here is the pro tip: Schedule a Demo Audit every six months to ensure your reel is actually doing its job.

When you listen, ask yourself these three questions:

  • Does this still sound like me? Our voices change over time. If your demo features a youthful, high-energy "college student" read but your natural resonance has matured into a "trusted advisor," you’re setting up a disconnect for the client.
  • Is the audio quality up to my current standard? If you’ve upgraded your mic, interface, or room treatment since you recorded that demo, the "old" audio might sound thin or lower quality compared to what you’re capable of delivering now.
  • Are the trends still relevant? VO styles can change in terms of popularity and relevance. The "announcer-y" commercial reads of years past have been replaced by the "authentic, non-performative" style. If your demo sounds like a relic of a different era, clients may assume your skills are dated too.

The Audit Rule: If a spot on your demo makes you cringe even a little bit, it’s time to cut it or replace it. It’s better to have a shorter demo of high quality content than a 60-90 second demo with weaker and outdated material.
