VO Pro Tip: The Value First Cold Email

Value First Cold Email

Hey Reader,

We’ve all been on the receiving end of a "cold" message that feels like a copy-pasted plea for attention. In the VO world, sending an email that says, "Hi, I'm a voice actor, please hire me," is a quick way to get your message archived—or worse, marked as spam.

If you want to actually get a response from a creative director or a production house, you have to flip the script. You need to lead with value.

Here is the pro tip: Don’t ask for work; offer a specific solution to a problem they actually have.

Before you hit send, do five minutes of "homework" on the company:

  • The "Recent Project" Bridge: Find a recent video they produced. Instead of saying "I can do that," say: "I loved the grounded, conversational tone of your recent piece for [Client]. If you ever need a similar 'guy-next-door' vibe for a fast-turnaround project, I’d love to be a resource for you
  • The "Specialized Skill" Solve: Do they do a lot of technical medical narration? e-Learning? High-energy promos? If you have a specific home-studio setup or a specialized background (like medical terminology or audio engineering), lead with that. You aren't just "another voice"—you’re a specialist who makes their life easier
  • The "No-Strings" Sample: Offer to record a "custom scratch track" for a project they’re currently storyboarding. It’s a zero-risk way for them to hear your voice on their specific copy without any pressure to hire you yet.

Remember: Your goal isn't to get a job today. It's to prove that you are a professional partner who understands their brand and can solve their production headaches

-Michael

But today, technology allows us to be mobile without sacrificing the professional quality our clients expect, should you so choose to make yourself available in that...

The Final Line Hey Reader, Have you ever listened back to a take and felt like the energy just... evaporated at the end? It’s a common habit: we put all our focus into a strong hook and a solid body, but as we reach the final sentence, our brains subconsciously go, "Almost done!" The result is a last line that trails off, drops in volume, or sounds like we're just checking a box. However, the last line is often the most important part of the script—it’s where the brand name or the...
