VO Pro Tip: Should you Follow up?

Should you Follow Up?

Hey Reader,

In the voice-over world, there’s a big difference between being a "proactive professional" and being "the person who clogs the inbox."

When it comes to following up, the most important rule is knowing where the audition came from.

The "No-Go" Zone: Online Casting & Agencies If you submitted an audition through a P2P site (like Voice123 or Voices) or through your agent, do not follow up. These casting directors are often sorting through 200+ auditions. If they want you, they will contact you. In this lane, "submit and forget" is the best way to protect your sanity and your reputation.

The "Green Light" Zone: Direct Clients & Personal Leads Following up is for the relationships you are building directly. Here is how to handle those:

  • The 14-Day Rule for Cold Outreach: If you sent a demo to a production house or a creative director and didn't hear back, a polite "re-introduction" after two weeks is perfectly fine.
  • The "Value-Add" Follow-Up: Instead of asking "Did you pick me?", send a follow-up that offers value. “Hey [Name], I just updated my Home Studio with a new Sennheiser 416—wanted to send over a fresh sample in case it fits your upcoming project!”
  • The "Existing Client" Nudge: If a regular client mentioned a project was coming up but it’s gone quiet, a quick check-in to see if they need help with "scheduling or turn-around times" shows you’re looking out for their deadline.

The bottom line: If there's a middle-man (Agent or P2P), let it go. If it’s a direct relationship, a strategic, infrequent nudge keeps you on their radar.

Auditing your Demos Hey Reader, When was the last time you actually listened to your own demos? Not just a quick skim to make sure the file works, but a deep, critical listen from start to finish? As you grow as a talent—and as the industry trends shift—a demo that sounded "pro" two years ago might be holding you back today. Here is the pro tip: Schedule a Demo Audit every six months to ensure...

In the past, being away from your studio meant saying "no" or frantically searching for a local pro studio. But today, technology allows us to be mobile without sacrificing the professional quality our clients expect, should you so choose to make yourself available in that...

The Final Line Hey Reader, Have you ever listened back to a take and felt like the energy just... evaporated at the end? It’s a common habit: we put all our focus into a strong hook and a solid body, but as we reach the final sentence, our brains subconsciously go, "Almost done!" The result is a last line that trails off, drops in volume, or sounds like we're just checking a box. However, the last line is often the most important part of the script—it’s where the brand name or the...
