Mouth Click Tips

Hey Reader,

Have you ever found yourself listening back to a great take, only to be met with those small, distracting mouth clicks? They can definitely be frustrating, whether you're just starting out or you've been in the game for a while. The good news is, there are some really effective ways to tackle them.

So, first things first: prevention is key. What really helps is focusing on hydration. Drink plenty of water throughout your day, especially before you step into the booth. A little trick many VO Talent use is eating a green apple about 15-20 minutes before a session – it really gets the saliva flowing and can help with any stickiness. Sometimes, just a quick brush of your teeth right beforehand can make a huge difference, and a tiny bit of lip balm if your lips feel dry. It's also a good idea to avoid anything too sugary or milky right before recording, as that can sometimes make things worse.

Now, even with all those preventative measures, a few clicks might still sneak through. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us! For post-production cleanup, a common approach is to zoom way, way in on your waveform in your DAW. You'll often see these really tiny, sharp spikes that are the clicks. You can often snip them out with a super precise cut. If you're looking for a tool that can do some of the heavy lifting for you, I personally use and highly recommend Izotope RX's Mouth De-click. It's a third-party software, not built into most DAWs, but it's a lifesaver for quickly zapping those persistent clicks. Just remember, you want to be careful not to overdo it – the goal is to remove the click, not make your performance sound unnatural.
