VO Pro Tip: Get Conversational by Imagining a Conversation

Voice-Over Pro Tip

Imaginary Conversation

Hey Reader,

The “conversational” read is incredibly popular in voice-over, and it’s a style clients often ask for. But sometimes, when you’re reading from a script, it can feel a little… well, scripted, even when you’re trying to sound natural. How do you truly make it sound like you’re just talking, not performing?

Here’s a simple trick that can really help: imagine you’re having an actual conversation with one specific person.

Before you hit record, pick someone you know really well – a friend, a family member, a colleague. Then, as you read the script, simply talk to them. Imagine they’re sitting across from you, and you’re telling them this information directly, naturally, just as you would in real life.

This mental shift can instantly impact your pacing, inflection, and overall delivery. You’ll find yourself naturally adding emphasis, taking slight pauses, and varying your tone in a way that feels genuinely conversational, without forcing it. You’re not “performing” for an audience; you’re simply sharing with one individual.

Give this ‘imaginary conversation’ technique a try on your next conversational audition or project. You might be surprised how much more authentic and engaging your reads become!
