Bringing Life to Corporate Reads

Hey Reader,

Corporate scripts have a reputation for being dry, but they're a massive part of the voice-over world. The key to a great corporate read isn't to just read the information on the page; it's to find the human story within the technical language.

If you're ever faced with a script full of jargon and data, here are three tips to help you bring it to life and make it sound natural and engaging and like something someone would want to listen to.

1. Find the "Who" and the "Why"

Behind every corporate message is a human goal. Is the company launching a new product to make a customer's job easier? Is the training video meant to help an employee succeed? Before you even read a word, ask yourself:

  • Who is the audience? (An intern, a CEO, a customer?)
  • What is the core message? (To inform, to motivate, to solve a problem?)

Answering these questions gives your read a purpose and a person to talk to. You'll naturally sound more conversational and connected.

2. Speak the "Most Important" Words

Corporate scripts are often dense, and trying to emphasize every single word will make your read sound frantic. Instead, identify the one or two key concepts or takeaways in each sentence. By focusing your energy and emphasis on those specific words, you'll guide the listener's attention and help them understand the point of the script, not just hear the words.

3. Treat it Like a Conversation

Imagine you're sitting with a colleague and explaining a new company initiative to them. You wouldn't use a dramatic, over-the-top performance. Instead, you'd speak clearly, with a friendly and confident tone. You'd use natural pauses and rhythms. Approach the script this way. Drop the "announcer voice" and adopt a natural, conversational style (unless specifically directed not to of course). The goal is to sound like an expert, not a stuffy narrator.

By shifting your mindset from "reading a script" to "having a conversation," you'll not only make the copy more engaging for the listener, but you'll also feel more connected and confident in your read.
