VO Pro Tip: More about "Cold" Reads

Voice-Over Pro Tip

Cold Reads

Hey Reader,

For experienced voice talent, a cold read isn't just about reading the words; it's about instantly understanding the story and making a great first impression. So, how do you go from a good first read to an audition-winning performance?

Here are a few strategies to sharpen your cold reading skills:

1. Read Ahead With Your Eyes

This is a game-changer. Your eyes should always be a few words ahead of your mouth. This simple trick gives your brain a chance to process what's coming next, allowing you to anticipate punctuation, complex words, or a shift in tone. It helps you navigate the script smoothly, avoid stumbling, and sound more natural and confident. Think of it as a built-in safety net that prevents you from getting caught off guard by a tricky phrase or a sudden change in direction.

2. Find the "Why" in a Flash

A cold read can often feel impersonal, but the key to a great performance is finding the emotion and motivation behind the words. In the brief time you have, quickly ask yourself:

  • Who am I talking to? (An old friend? A large audience? A customer?)
  • What is my goal? (To inform, persuade, entertain, or warn?)
  • What is the tone? (Urgent? Friendly? Professional?)

Answering these questions instantly provides a framework for your read, moving it from a simple recital of words to an actual performance with intention. This isn't about overthinking; it's about making a single, quick decision that gives your read purpose.

3. Know Your Go-To Reads

As you gain more expereince in VO, you have a range of go-to styles that are second nature to you. Before you even get the script, you can prepare yourself by thinking about which of your established voices or tones might be a good fit. Is it your warm, friendly conversational read? Your authoritative corporate narrator? Your energetic commercial voice? Being able to quickly match a script to one of your signature styles will save you time and help you deliver a performance that feels authentic to you, even under pressure.

Mastering the cold read is a skill that will get you more bookings and help you deliver confident, stellar performances every single time. By combining these three strategies, you'll not only read the words on the page, but you'll also understand and embody them instantly.
