VO Pro Tip: The Audition Slump - Dealing with Low Bookings

Dealing with "No"

Hey Reader,

Let’s be real: A professional voice-over career is a marathon of rejection. You might send out 50 or even 100 auditions to book a single job. When the "No's" start piling up, it’s easy to feel frustrated, doubt your talent, and fall into an "audition slump." I experience it myself and have these feelings from time to time.

Your resilience is just as important as your microphone or your read. Here are three simple shifts to help you push through and keep your motivation high:

1. Shift Your Focus from Booking to Executing

You can't control if you book a job; you can only control the quality of the audition you send. Try this: Focus your energy on the Process, not the Result.

Your goal for the day shouldn't be "Book a Job." It should be:

  • "Send 10 high-quality, professional auditions."
  • "Practice my cold read skill for 15 minutes."
  • "Send out 3 connection requests on LinkedIn."

When you celebrate the execution of these tasks, you win every day, regardless of the booking rate.

2. Schedule Your "Reset"

Professional athletes don't run 24/7. When you’re feeling burned out or frustrated, recognize it and give yourself permission to step away. Schedule a "Reset" day or even just a "Reset" hour. Go for a walk, listen to a podcast, or work on a non-VO hobby. A brief, guilt-free break can clear your mind and bring renewed energy and perspective when you step back into the booth.

3. Review Your Wins (The "Success File")

When you're only seeing the rejections, you forget the progress. Keep a "Success File" (a simple document or folder) that includes:

  • Positive feedback from a client or coach.
  • The first demo you ever recorded (to see how far you've come!).
  • A list of the jobs you did book this year.

Before you audition when you're feeling down, spend two minutes reviewing this file. It’s a powerful, tangible reminder that you are a capable professional.

Hang in there. The most successful VO talent are the ones who don't quit. Keep executing, keep practicing, and that next "Yes" is just around the corner!

-Michael

LinkedIn Marketing Hey Reader, When most VO talent think about finding work, they often focus on Pay-to-Play sites, direct email marketing, or agents. But a professional networking platform like LinkedIn can also be a great tool in the marketing toolkit. LinkedIn is where the decision-makers live—the people who hire voice talent. Here’s how you can stop scrolling and start strategically building connections that turn into clients: 1. Optimize Your Profile for Clients (Not Just Other Actors)...

Home Recording Spaces Hey Reader, When you record VO at home, you’ve probably battled the biggest enemy of clean, professional audio: your room. That slightly hollow, echo-y sound (reverb) can make an otherwise perfect read sound amateur, costing you bookings. The great news is you don’t need to spend thousands on a full vocal booth (although you certainly can once you advance in your career). You just need to focus on breaking up flat, parallel surfaces and applying adequate treatment as...

Being Authentic Hey Reader, We all know the "Conversational Read" is king right now, whether it's for commercials, e-learning, or corporate narration. But sometimes, we can get so focused on sounding conversational that we forget the crucial step: actually being authentic. The single secret ingredient that makes a read truly memorable is You. Here are a few ways to stop "acting" and start simply being yourself in the booth: 1. Find the Hook You Believe Every script has a central idea or...
