VO Pro Tip: How to properly "Listen Back"

Listening Back

Hey Reader,

You’ve just finished a long editing session. You’ve de-clicked, normalized, EQ’d and done all of your other processing to your audio.

But before you send it off to the client or prospect, make sure you are properly listening back to your file.

Here is the pro tip: Before you hit "send" on that final file, perform a few different Listen Back Tests.

I always recommend closing your eyes for this, as it helps you focus solely on the sound. You don't want to be watching the waveform or any meters.

Do a few passes, one listening for technical things such as clicks/plosives/noise/etc...

Then do a pass listening solely for performance. Is it flat, are there spots to punch certain words? Are your pronunciations right? Is everything clear and articulate?

Then maybe open your eyes for one and read along with the script as you listen back, and try to pretend you are the client doing so. Is the pacing good? Did you miss any words or punctuation?

Don't fall in the habit of getting lazy and just sending your files off without a review first.

-Michael

The Final Line Hey Reader, Have you ever listened back to a take and felt like the energy just... evaporated at the end? It’s a common habit: we put all our focus into a strong hook and a solid body, but as we reach the final sentence, our brains subconsciously go, "Almost done!" The result is a last line that trails off, drops in volume, or sounds like we're just checking a box. However, the last line is often the most important part of the script—it’s where the brand name or the...
