VO Pro Tip: Handling Rejections with Grace

Handling Rejections with Grace

Hey Reader,

Hearing that a client chose another talent after you submitted a stellar audition or reached a callback can feel like a dead end.

Most voice actors either ignore the notification email or send a brief, polite "Thanks for letting me know" before moving on.

While there's nothing wrong with a quick thank-you, a "soft rejection"—where you were shortlisted, got a callback, or received positive feedback—is actually one of your best opportunities to build a lasting professional relationship.

Instead of writing off the loss, reply with a short, appreciative message that positions you as a reliable collaborator for their next project.

Here’s a simple structure you can use:

  1. Acknowledge and congratulate: Thank them for the update and wish them luck with the production.
  2. Reinforce your interest: Briefly mention how much you enjoyed the script or direction.
  3. Leave the door open: Offer to send a quote/audition anytime or invite them to reach out with anything you can help with.

A quick note like, "Thanks so much for the update, [Name]! I appreciate the opportunity! Best of luck with the project and if anything comes along that I might be a good fit for, I’d love to collaborate down the line," sets you apart immediately.

Producers remember talent who are easy to work with and professional when plans change. Next time they have a need that you might be able to fill, they're likely to reach back out.

Capture that First Read! Hey Reader, This is a tip I need to start following more myself. If you're like me, you will often open up an audition and read the script or at least part of it out loud to yourself before stepping into the booth. So often, I find myself really liking the way that initial read or parts of it just naturally came out of me. But also often, I don't capture that into the mic! It’s a natural habit. We like to test out the phrasing, get comfortable with the pronunciation,...

10 Minute Audition Cap Hey Reader, It’s easy to catch yourself spending twenty or thirty minutes on a single 30-second audition when it's for a really good project. You record a take, tweak the EQ, second-guess your pacing, re-record the opening line five times, and listen back on loop trying to decide if it’s "perfect." By the time you hit send, you’ve spent half an hour of creative energy on an audition that should have taken five minutes. Overthinking rarely leads to a better read. In...

Faster Editing Visual Tricks Hey Reader, If you do long-form reads—e.g., audiobooks, eLearning, or corporate narration—editing out mistakes can eat up way more time than the actual recording session. (even on commercial reads!) Stopping your flow to hit undo or split a region every time you stumble breaks your momentum in the booth. Or alternatively, if you are recording everything before sitting down to edit, it can be overwhelming staring at a massively long waveform that includes the good...
