10 Minute Audition Cap

Hey Reader,

It’s easy to catch yourself spending twenty or thirty minutes on a single 30-second audition when it's for a really good project.

You record a take, tweak the EQ, second-guess your pacing, re-record the opening line five times, and listen back on loop trying to decide if it’s "perfect."

By the time you hit send, you’ve spent half an hour of creative energy on an audition that should have taken five minutes.

Overthinking rarely leads to a better read. In fact, it usually strips away the spontaneous, natural energy that makes a take stand out in the first place.

Try putting a strict 10-minute clock on your standard auditions:

Minutes 0–2: Read the script twice, make note of key emphasis points, and decide who you’re talking to.
Minutes 2–6: Record two or three takes. Slate if requested, change up your direction slightly on take two, and trust your instincts.
Minutes 6–10: Do an editing pass for mouth clicks or stumbles, export the file through your processing chain (or raw if requested), hit submit, and close the project.

Setting a timer keeps you efficient in the booth. It forces you to rely on your initial performance instincts rather than micro-managing every syllable.

Plus, saving that extra time and mental energy allows you to audition more consistently without running yourself into the ground. Set a 10 minute cap for yourself, and honestly, aim for 5 minutes as you improve.
