VO Pro Tip: How to Build a "No-Audition" Relationship with a Client


The "No-Audition" Relationship

Hey Reader,

We spend a huge portion of our careers auditioning. It’s the "job" before the job. But to really build a sustainable business as a VO Talent, you need to start gaining repeat clients and preferably those with which you have a "No-Audition" relationship.

This is the holy grail of a VO career: becoming a "preferred vendor." It’s when a producer or creative director has a script, thinks of your voice immediately, and emails you to check your availability instead of posting a casting call.

How do you get there?

  • Be the "Easy Button": Producers are often under tight deadlines. If you are the person who responds quickly, delivers clean files that are named correctly, hits the performance they want on the first try, and/or takes direction well, you make their life easier.
  • Focus on the Connection, Not the Gig: Instead of just sending a "hire me" email once in a while, try to build a real connection when and where you can. Share an article relevant to their industry or comment to congratulate them on a recent project they posted on LinkedIn.
  • The "Safety Net" Offer: When you finish a job, let them know: "I loved working on this! If you ever have a last-minute pickup or a quick internal project that doesn't warrant a full casting call, feel free to reach out to me directly." You are offering to save them time.

Pro Tip: Your goal is to move from a "voice on a list" to a "partner in production." When you solve a producer's problem before they even have to post an audition, you’ve secured a client for life.
